Whole School Open Evening – Wednesday 26th September

Please find information relating to our Whole School Opening Evening taking place on Wednesday 26th September 6.30pm to 9pm

Dear Parent/Carer

As you will be aware, our whole-school open evening takes place on Wednesday 26th September.  We will be you the opportunity to meet with staff in a relaxed and informal environment and learn about how teaching and learning is conducted in each of our subjects and faculties across the school.

We will be having a number of demonstrations, hands-on activities and mini-presentations on aspects of learning within subjects, which we hope you will find interesting and relevant.

In addition, in response to requests from parents we will be providing a number of sessions on specific topics and these are detailed below.  There will be teas and coffees available throughout the evening from our senior ‘Barista Enterprise Group‘.

Optional presentations (Assembly Hall)

  • 6.30pm – Developing the Young Workforce, what’s it all about?  – Skills Development Scotland
  • 7pm – Substance misuse in our community – working together to keep our young people safe

– Police Scotland/AHS/Health

  • 8pm – Supporting learning at home – Show My Homework – How does it work?  – Mrs Foster

The following subject specific presentations will be taking place and a final timetable will be given to parents on the night.  Some of these presentations will be repeated throughout the evening to ensure parents have the opportunity to attend should they wish.

  • Accelerated Reader – School Library – Mr Reid (English) and Mrs Acham

This powerful reading intervention has been shown to have a significant impact on improving the reading fluency, comprehension and confidence of young people and we are using this programme in the school.  Come along and find out about it and the impact it can have.

  • Instrument Playing Open Session – Music – Mr O’Neil (Music)

Parents/carers & their youngsters are welcome to come and ‘give it a go’ and play the range of instruments on offer in music in an improvisation session led by Mr O’Neil. You are welcome to bring your own instrument if you have one, but instruments will be provided on the night – no experience necessary!

  • Flipped Learning – Mr Donlin (Social Subjects)

Come and find out more about flipped learning, an alternative teaching style used in the senior school. The flipped classroom turns learning on its head!  This short session (20 mins approx.) will give you the opportunity to look at the resources used and discuss the impact flipped learning can have on progress and motivation.

Support for Learning (Mrs Bunting):

A display of resources from Dyslexia Scotland; technology used to support Literacy; Numeracy and Literacy learning aids; Autistic Spectrum Disorder approaches to support learning; English for Speakers of Other Languages materials and Study skills.

Pastoral Support (Mrs Macbeth)

Mrs Macbeth will have a display of the materials and approaches used in Personal and Social Education to support youngsters in learning about becoming a young adult.

We will also have presentations and displays of learning resources in Maths, Art, PE, Hospitality, Technical, Science (including Mr McCartney’s experiment extravaganza!) and the Senior Leadership Team.

Please could you complete the very short survey by following the link below, to let us know if you will be attending.  There are 3 questions and it should take no longer than 1 minute.
