Our
Story

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

This is an exciting time at Arran High School for the award scheme. We have over forty active participants this year. We have students working towards all levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) of the DofE Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award will not only enhance the CVs and university applications of those students involved, but also allows them to build on their team work skills, survival skills, and allows them to learn new skills they would otherwise have not experienced.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme explained...

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award groups working towards Bronze, Silver and Gold awards are a strong and vibrant part of our school community.

Please click here to read about how each award can be achieved.

Students in S3 (aged 14+) are encouraged to participate in the Bronze Award, students who are aged 15+ the Silver Award, and students aged 16+ the Gold Award. Time frames are extended for those joining directly into Silver and Gold.

Outline of the Scheme

Volunteering

It’s about choosing to give time to something useful, without getting paid. Helping within community organisations or volunteering for a charity.

Physical

Being active, anything that requires a sustained level of physical energy and involves doing an activity. We have lots of team and individual sports available.

Skill

To develop practical and social skills and personal interests by developing a new skill or improving an existing one. Many of our students take part in extra-curricular music groups

Expedition

Students plan and train for the completion of an adventurous journey. This usually takes place in May or June.

Residential

At Gold Level, students must do an additional fifth residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing

a shared activity. This is in addition to the expedition.
